Clinical trial of Sultamicillin and Ampieillin for the treatment of Lower respiratory tract infection of Adult population


Abstract
Sultamicillin is a toysylate salt of the methylester linked combination of Ampicillifi and Sulbactam which has a role as Beta-lactamase inhibitor.
This clinical study was carried out to establish the efficacy and safety of Sultamicillin compared to Ampicillin in the treatment of 60 patients with lower respiratory tract infection documented by clinical and laboratory findings, and obtained the following results; 1. Sultamicillin treated patients showed 70% bacteriologic cure rate and 86.6% clinical
improvement, and Ampicillin treated group showed 60% bacteriologic cure rate and 80%
clinical improvement rate, respectively.
2. Drug toleration of the Sultamicillin treated group was fair with mild side reaction of loose stool, anorexia and occasional nausea.
3. In vitro sensitivity test, 33% of all isolated organism showed sensitivity to Ampicillin and 44.4% to Sultamicillin, respectively.
